What a wonderful world would it be, if all everyone we knew ever wanted from us was just to be happy.
Well, that ain’t happening!
We live in a dystopian world where your failure gives people joy and your growth sadness.
But we often (I particularly) conveniently forget that from day 1 universe gave us two people who want nothing else but to see us happy.
(It does not have to be your biological parent, it's whoever you see as your nurturer)
Maybe our parents forget to remind us of that, as much as they should. Maybe Indian culture does not allow accepting your child as who they are as much as expecting them to meet societal expectations. (That Sharma ji ka beta)
And maybe it is because of deep-rooted pain as a result of all the above and inhuman expectations from them (our parents) to be perfect too.
A significant and rather difficult learning over the last 2 years was learning to see my parents as normal people.
I am still learning to do that.
As Dr. Jug, from the movie Dear Zindagi, said ‘apne parents ko ek baar maa baap ke unche darze se neeche laakar aam logo ki tarah dekhne ki koshish karo, jo sabki tarah galti karte hain’
(For a moment, bring your parents down from the high pedestal of parents, and try to see them as normal people, who like everyone else make mistakes)
Parents are normal people who, like us, fail to draw boundaries, say what they shouldn’t, and don’t say what they should when they should.
If you keep digging over your pain, more often than not, it stems from a moment when either you think you failed your parents or vice versa.
But then, if one day, you can bulk up the courage to open your heart to them and be your true self, given hopefully they too are in a space to hear you out.
Maybe not the first time, but a few more tries later. Like in the movie Tamasha, when Ved confronts his father and tells him who he truly is, not the rat race mediocre character he is being asked to play, we will also hear back:
‘yeh waala mera favourite hai’
