Forgiveness ain't that easy

One of the biggest challenges in my personal journey was, learning to forgive.

While traveling I came across a very special person, someone who was on her own healing journey.

So I asked her, “How do I forgive when I don’t want to?, and please don’t tell me it’s for me “

Here’s what she said “Forgive yourself”

Looking at my offended and confused face, she repeated.

“Forgive yourself.

If you knew, what you know now, would you have let that happen to you. Would you have let anyone treat you that way?”

I said, “Absolutely not. I know better”

She then said something that will stay with me forever.

“Exactly, Mahima, forgive yourself for not knowing better.

We don’t need to forgive anyone we don’t think deserves forgiveness. All we need to do is forgive ourselves.”

What helped me even more was understanding that this principle doesn’t need to be limited to people.

When we feel disrespected or devalued by a system or society, we harbour immense anger but are confused because there is no one person that you can blame. But if you knew how the system worked, would you let the cons overpower you or would you change your approach?

Forgive yourself for not knowing better.
